growing up in china, i listened to loads of mandarin / cantonese ballads, which is the predominant genre there and casts this melancholy undertone over life
although i've rotated out of that over the last 10 years in the u.s., re-listening to those songs brings back more than nostalgia
it's oddly comforting how they collapse time and stitch my current self back to my roots, even though sometimes they feel lightyears apart -- the continuity reminds me that i'm real and didn't end up living in someone else's body

a lot of ambitious young people give up their fleeting privilege of being whimsical too early to pursue the abstract concept of 'greatness' -- to get ahead, stay relevant, and be legible
but just because you can accelerate doesn’t mean you always should
the feeling of professional growth can masquerade as personal growth -- constant progress could make it harder to recognize that taking a step back may help you see the world & yourself a bit differently
