Why don't farmers join the chorus of support for lynx reintroduction in Britain? A return of lynx would be a big win for most farmers. For arable farmers, deer control is much needed. Lynx would save a fortune in avoided crop damage and unneeded deer fencing. Dairy and beef farmers would have fewer badgers around, as well as fewer deer, thereby reducing wildlife-cattle TB transmission. (Lynx don't eat cows, obviously.) Foresters would save money as a result of reduced deer pressure on young trees. Sheep in open pasture are not targeted by lynx, which like to stay well hidden in woodland. The only loser may be a handful of sheep kept in actual woodland, but in Britain we don't tend to farm sheep in this way, except perhaps in some straths in the Highlands of Scotland. Farmers really should get on board with lynx reintroduction! Apart from anything, just imagine the unforgettable magic of actually glimpsing one. Which is of course why millions of Brits want Britain to join every other European country in restoring these beautiful secretive, harmless creatures to our landscapes where they belong. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9e8…

One of Europe's most iconic trees tells a story of human migration. The sweet chestnut spread across much of Europe through centuries of cultivation, trade and settlement. From Galicia to the Balkans, what we now consider local heritage is also part of a shared European history. 🌰
