A lot of construction work is still done by hand simply because the machines to automate it don’t exist. That’s become a bottleneck for building things like solar farms, data centers, and other critical infrastructure. @cosmic_robotics is building those machines. Their robots have already installed 11,000 solar panels, and they just signed a major contract with the largest construction company in the country. They’re building the construction robots we’ll need on Earth today, and eventually on the Moon and Mars. @JamesAEmerick

its terrifying to see 80 pounds of metal and glass fly through the air solar panels act like a sail in high winds - they catch a gust and get ripped right out of a crew's hands. when gusts hit 20-30 mph construction on solar sites stops Cosmic-1 has installed panels in 30+ mph gusts while the rest of the site was shut down while we can't yet control the weather, we can control if it causes a delay. when speed to power is everything, schedule is king

Demand is basically infinite for solar, so much so that many large contractors have jobs fully booked out for years already. We need automation to keep up with demand and that’s why our first product at @cosmic_robotics is solar. It also happens to be one of the first things we’ll need to build on Mars

when people see cosmic-1 in person, the first reaction is always shock at how big it is. which is funny, because it's small in comparison to a bulldozer or excavator then there's the follow-up question: "so how do these get to a jobsite?" we sized cosmic-1 to fit within tracker arrays and be easily mobilized to site. when we first started cosmic, we rented an F-250 and a 24ft utility trailer and hauled cosmic-1 to sites ourselves. no lowboy trailer, permits, or week of logistics planning required

POV: you're a solar panel about to be installed by Cosmic-1

At @cosmic_robotics we've been scaling Cosmic-1 for building solar farms, but we'd gotten enough inbound interest for other applications that we decided to experiment a bit. The verdict is that both our robot platform and our infra is actually much closer to generalizing across applications than I was expecting. We built this demo to make our robot lift industrial cooling pipes in just 10 days; it's an application we'd gotten interest from data center builders for. What was surprising was actually how well our simulation pipeline translated across applications. We were able to retrain our model overnight purely off of synthetic data and deploy it one-shot. It's taken about a year and half of experimentation against real jobsite data to close the gap, but it's pretty cool to see it working so well for all sorts of jobsites now. We're experimenting a lot, more demos coming soon...

Today, @thelcjones and I excited to announce @cosmic_robotics has joined @ycombinator's summer batch to accelerate our mission: Building autonomous construction robots to build a city on Mars. And our systems are already at work today on some of the largest energy projects in the US.
