⚡ MI5 named a Chinese institute an MSS front and said 100+ UK-linked academics helped fund its spy tech. A 30 Sept alert says CGTRI exists to bankroll work that improves MSS capability: AI, cyber, covert comms, steganography. Some academics may not know who paid. Beijing calls it fabricated. NEW: A Russian biker with links to Moscow’s sabotage chief can be revealed as the suspected mastermind of a bomb plot in the heart of Europe. A joint Telegraph and Welt am Sonntag investigation reveals that Oleg Levushkin - a Russian family man with a passion for motorbikes - is believed to have planned a failed attempt to plant explosives at Germany’s Leipzig-Halle airport. German investigators suspect that Mr Levushkin planned the attack before ordering Andrei Karshakou, a Belarusian proxy agent named today for the first time, to carry out his plans in August. Classified intelligence documents from Germany, Lithuania and Poland, as well as interviews with senior Western intelligence officials, detail the pair’s alleged planning of the attack. The evidence points to disturbing links between the Leipzig attack and a wider network of sabotage plots across Europe, all allegedly orchestrated by a hard-line unit in the GRU. This is a huge story: UK's internal security service MI5 issued an unprecedented public criticism of China, warning that more than 100 academics linked to British entities have unwittingly helped China's espionage operations, and that continuing to work with that Chinese entity could lead to criminal charges. This is perhaps the most aggressive public announcement from the UK towards China in decades. Too early to know if it signals a changing attitude from the government or is a test to see how Beijing responds -- either way, it's very significant. bbc.com/news/articles/cwy7zr…
