Critical Dilemma: The Rise of Critical Theories and Social Justice Ideology—Implications for the Church and Society by Neil Shenvi and Pat Sawyer
Podcasts and substacks are great but certain subject matter needs more and this is a case in point.
Critical theory and its various expressions in fields like critical race theory, critical pedagogy, and queer theory have had, and are having, profound consequences on our society.
Contemporary critical theory functions as a worldview. Its ideas about race, class, gender, identity, and justice have dramatically shaped how people think, act, and view one another. Proponents of these ideas claim they offer long-overdue solutions to societal injustices and imbalances of power. Yet in their wake, we find disunity, conflict, and resentment.
In Critical Dilemma, authors Neil Shenvi and Pat Sawyer illuminate the origins and influences of contemporary critical theory. While acknowledging that it can provide some legitimate insights regarding race, class, and gender, Critical Dilemma exposes the ultimately flawed ideologies at play―and how blindly embracing them poses a serious threat to both the church and society at large. With exhaustive research and thoughtful critique, Critical Dilemma demonstrates the dangers of critical theory.
I would recommend this book for parents/guardians, teacher/principals, clergy members and anyone who seeks to navigate a world that has become infested with Critical Social Justice Theory and it’s associated dogmas.
This book could be of significant value to people of faith, who, with the best of intentions, have slipped into heresy with regard to elements of Church teaching by supporting a CSJT view on particular issues, or by adopting it’s worldview in general.
The liberal view of Social Justice is very similar to the Christian one, and hence it’s conflicts with CSJT are also very similar, making this book of interest to non-Christians who struggle to make sense of the CSJT workview.
This could be the most important book you have read in a long time.
