⌛Physics Friday⏳ Do you know how microscopic tardigrades can survive temperatures just one degree above absolute zero? 🐻 Tardigrades (or "water bears") are famous for surviving the vacuum of space, crushing pressures, and temperatures as low as -272°C (1 kelvin). Normally, when a living organism freezes, water inside its cells expands into sharp ice structures that puncture cell membranes and destroy vital tissues. Tardigrades avoid this fate through a process called vitrification, which turns their insides into glass! When exposed to extreme cold, tardigrades pause their biological activity, expel almost all the water from their bodies, and produce specialized flexible proteins. Instead of sharp ice crystals forming, these proteins turn the tardigrade's insides into a protective glass. Once warmed up, the glass melts back into liquid, and the tardigrade goes right back to normal! #PhysicsFriday #Tardigrades #Biophysics #Vitrification #Cryogenics #AbsoluteZero #PhaseTransition #MaterialsScience #Physics

Just like cobalt, rare earths, lithium and nickel, having a strategic reserve of helium-3 should be an important move in Canada’s sovereignty strategy.🛡️ Helium-3 is so incredibly rare that the U.S. is planning to harvest it from the moon. Yet we’re all counting on it for defence. It’s critical in border security equipment that detects dangerous materials, and helium-3 is the fuel for the cryogenic infrastructure in quantum stacks — which means it’s critical for new and emerging defence technologies. Zero Point Cryogenics CEO Chris Cassin was pleased to sit down with Vanguard Defence to talk about helium-3’s role in keeping Canada safe — and the strategic reserve the country will need as we move forward: 🔗vanguarddefence.ca/p/canada-… #ColderForLonger #QuantumComputing #Cryogenics #DeepTech #ZeroPointCryogenics #ZPC

⌛Physics Friday⏳ Do you know how scientists catch a single particle of light?⚛️ Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors (SNSPDs) are ultra-sensitive light sensors that power quantum computing and deep-space laser communications! Detecting single photons requires extreme cold, relying on superconducting materials that conduct electricity with zero resistance. Scientists start by cooling an ultra-thin wire down to near absolute zero, allowing an electric current to pass through effortlessly. When a single photon hits the wire, its energy creates a localized hotspot. This small burst of heat momentarily breaks the superconducting state, creating a sudden roadblock of electrical resistance. The current surges around this spot, producing a voltage pulse that signals a photon has landed. Within nanoseconds, the wire cools back down, resetting the sensor to catch the next particle of light! #PhysicsFriday #SNSPD #SinglePhotonDetector #QuantumPhysics #Superconductivity #Cryogenics #Photonics #Physics #QuantumTech #ZeroPoint #ZPC #ColderForLonger

⌛Physics Friday⏳ Do you know how scientists use lasers to cool atomic gas clouds?⚛️ Last week we discussed what a Bose-Einstein Condensate is, but do you know how we make one? Scientists use a technique called laser cooling, which uses light to slow atoms down, since temperature is really just a measure of how fast atoms are moving around (generating heat as they collide). They start by sending precisely tuned lasers against the path of moving atoms. The atom absorbs a particle of laser light (a photon) and gets a tiny push backward. Its speed drops, meaning its kinetic energy (temperature) decreases. By aiming six lasers at the gas from every direction, scientists create a light trap known as "optical molasses". To keep the atoms from drifting away, a magnetic field is added, completing a Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT) that holds them in place. Once these atoms are practically still, their temperature plunges to a fraction of a degree above absolute zero, paving the way for them to lock together and merge into a single BEC! #PhysicsFriday #LaserCooling #BoseEinsteinCondensate #BEC #QuantumPhysics #OpticalMolasses #DopplerCooling #ZeroPoint #ZPC #ColderForLonger

⚛️Physics Friday⚛️ Do you know what a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) is? Imagine millions of individual atoms merging to become a single quantum wave. That’s a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC). It's a bizarre state of matter that forms when a gas of atoms (bosons) is cooled down to nanokelvin temperatures. At these extreme temperatures, the atoms lose most of their energy, and all drop into the same lowest quantum state. As this happens, their quantum wavelengths stretch and overlap until millions of individual atoms lose their separate identities and merge into a single collective quantum entity (sometimes referred to as a 'superatom'). While a BEC shares the frictionless flow of a superfluid (discussed in our last Physics Friday), it is created from a dilute gas rather than a dense liquid like helium. First predicted by Satyendra Nath Bose and Albert Einstein in the 1920s, this state gives scientists a way to study quantum mechanics on a visible and human scale. #PhysicsFriday #BoseEinsteinCondensate #BEC #QuantumPhysics #ZeroPointEnergy #ZPC #Cryogenics #ColderForLonger #ZeroPoint #Dilution
