One is engineering the fix. The other is lobbying for control.

So I just watched PewDiePie’s new video and this might be one of the most ironic AI controversies I’ve seen recently..
He tried to “distill just a little bit” from OpenAI while building his own local AI model.
OpenAI banned him.
He appealed. They unbanned him.
He tried again.
BANNED AGAIN 😭
Now here’s where this gets interesting...
PewDiePie is building Ajax, a small local AI model for his open-source Odysseus project. He needed better training data, so he experimented with using outputs from OpenAI as part of that process.
And honestly, I’m conflicted.
AI companies have trained models on huge amounts of our internet data, often without every creator explicitly agreeing to have their work used for AI training.
But when a solo developer tries to learn from the output of one of those models to build something himself, suddenly there’s a hard line?
I understand OpenAI protecting its models from companies trying to extract and replicate them at scale.
But this is where I’m genuinely unsure.
PewDiePie isn’t some giant competing AI lab. He’s basically a solo developer experimenting with a small local model.
Should the same rules really apply here?
Where exactly should the line be?
Palantir CEO Alex Karp on the distillation attacks from Chinese companies against Anthropic:
" How do you think the models got their value? They distilled all the value of IP everywhere, including enterprise everywhere."

“Distillation keeps the gap between the frontier & open weight models relatively small.”
“And today, there's no easy way to prevent distillation.”
