Zcash's ultimate moat is its culture.
You just can't copy that.
Yep. Blockchains at their most fundamental level are a culture. Sure, you added some privacy. Does that make you the people who already did that 10 years ago and are now cracking scaling like no one has ever seen?
People don’t understand that coins are ultimately a culture that likeminded talent gravitates towards. All the best talent has already been sucked up by the leader. Unless there is a major crisis with that coin culturally, they will stay ahead for a while.

The "Shielded Bitcoin" paper is a great step forward. More privacy on Bitcoin is good for everyone.
Fun fact: Zerocoin, the paper behind Zcash, was first proposed for Bitcoin in 2013. The Bitcoin community passed on it, as zero-knowledge proofs were still immature.
But the solution the paper presents is not competition for Zcash:
- It uses a trusted setup
- There's no consensus enforcement
- No trustless light clients
- Its bridge, usually the most hacked part of these designs, isn't specified yet
- Bitcoin L1 transaction fees
- It doesn't have a >$7B shielded pool with millions of transactions to hide in
- It's a paper. Zcash has ~10 years in production, pioneered ZK proofs in production, and has the wallets, audits, and hardware support.
More broadly: privacy works best when built into the base layer. Not requiring Bitcoin changing is this design's biggest selling point, and also its biggest drawback.
We're rooting for more privacy on Bitcoin. Financial privacy isn't zero-sum.

While I deeply respect the cryptographic research that @nemothenoone and the @allocinitxyz team are pursuing to enable covenants on Bitcoin without a soft fork, it’s worth emphasizing that the cryptography underlying this approach is still highly experimental, and its security assumptions are far from established.
It will likely take years of research and scrutiny before there is enough confidence in these constructions for use in Bitcoin applications — and realistically, that confidence may never materialize.
I love the boldness of their vision and I’m impressed by the progress so far. At the same time, I think it’s important that the community has a clear understanding of where the research currently stands and how uncertain its practical viability remains from a cryptographic perspective.

Researchers built an AI that doxes any "anonymous" reddit account in under a minutes for $2.
eth zurich and anthropic published a terrifying paper proving that "practical anonymity" on the internet is officially dead.
they built a fully autonomous ai pipeline that takes your pseudonymous posts, extracts your identity signals, searches the web, and figures out exactly who you are. no human investigator needed.
the numbers are actually mindblowing..
- 67% of hacker news users identified correctly
- when the system makes a guess, it is right 90% of the time
- it even unmasked scientists whose interview transcripts were explicitly redacted for privacy
the scariest part? even time doesn't protect you.. they tested users who took a full year break and changed their interests. the ai still matched their old and new profiles with 90% precision. it sees through your persona changes like they aren't even there.
there is no defense against this. the agent splits the work into tiny, benign tasks like "summarizing a profile" or "ranking candidates." no api safety guardrail is going to flag it because no single step looks malicious..
every throwaway account. every "nobody will connect this to me" comment. it’s all just searchable micro-data now.

Paper shows LLM agents re-ID 67% of tested HN users (LinkedIn-linked then stripped) at 90% precision for $1-4 in minutes. Authors note these easier than typical pseudonymous accounts; lower for careful/Reddit users. Not "any" account.
