In the history of Mississippi's Parchman prison, music is inextricable from its brutal legacy. I attended a concert of the newly-revived Parchman Band at the GRAMMY museum and witnessed some talented musicians. Here's my dispatch: themarshallproject.org/2026/…
This week on The Other Side, Mina Corpuz with Mississippi Today and Daja E. Henry with The Marshall Project review their deep-dive reporting into suicides in Mississippi's prisons.

Nearly 75% of the incarcerated people who died by suicide in Mississippi prisons were in restrictive housing, where well-being checks are supposed to happen more frequently than in the general population.
The news team spent a year investigating. Story with @dajaehenry:
An investigation found at least 47 suicides occurred in solitary confinement in Mississippi, where cries for mental health care were met with isolation and punishment. ow.ly/lqKr50Z8BmZ

A young mother begged for help. Instead, she was sent to solitary confinement, where she died by suicide.
Despite a legion of evidence of its harms, solitary confinement was the common factor in nearly 75% of suicides in Mississippi prisons since 2015.

In 1962, JFK used the Insurrection Act — an emergency power typically used to uphold civil rights & stop violent uprisings — to end a White supremacist uprising at Ole Miss. Years later, Trump wanted to use it differently, unleashing troops on Minnesotans.

At least 60 people arrested in Hinds County have been jailed in its detention facilities for over three months — including at least five for more than a year — with no indictment filed against them and no pathway to a trial in sight.

Dozens have been locked up in Hinds County for 3 months or more with no indictment, a critical step in getting to trial. Many of them are crammed into Raymond Detention Center, where a man was killed this year. One man has been locked up for 18 months.
