End rough sleeping … stop all small boats … stretch targets are good but I suspect Lucy Powell is correct that you “can't stop everything all of the time”
Our BBC South East interview with Andy Burnham, in which he says he wants to stop all small boats but declines to say when and says Brexit hasn’t helped: Our goal is to stop all migrant boats, says Burnham bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm9d…

NEW: Andy Burnham says next general election will be in 2029 Tells regional broadcasters: "Well yes, that's when the next election will be. All of this speculation on an early election, I can knock that dead." In another interview he says: "No election any time soon"

White House has asked OpenAI and Anthropic not to share their new AI models with the UK testing agency until the models have gone through testing with the US government first Important scoop from my colleagues and another blow to Burnham's appeal for global agreement on AI 👇

Darren Jones tells @PronouncedAlva: “The irony of the welfare rebellion – that was organised by people who are now in government – was that Keir wasn’t here because he was saving NATO ... I don’t think he’s being given sufficient credit for it.”
Exc: Darren Jones on the "coup", the secret deals that got Andy Burnham into Number 10, and what Labour needs to do now. Interview with Starmer's former right-hand man in this week's New Statesman: our Labour conference special newstatesman.com/politics/po…

Interesting to marry this up with what Burnham told us on the plane — I asked if the recent warnings of doom had given him pause. He said they had. But added “We’ve got to find that point of balance here, not all of a sudden turn against and become … a doom-monger about AI.”
Exclusive from @MaxKendix US artificial intelligence companies are deliberately overstating the risk posed by their technology for their own financial benefits, senior British officials believe Andy Burnham told the UN general assembly that the world must rein in artificial intelligence and that there needs to be a “single set of global principles and standards”. He said while AI offers potentially transformative benefits to the economy, education and healthcare, it also represents a potential “source of disruption to the way we live and work” However privately officials believe that AI companies have a vested interest in exaggerating the power of their technology An official told The Times: “The companies are incentivised to sound the alarm: they sell more by overstating the power of their models, and they can squeeze out competition by being the only ones who can afford to operate in the constraints.” They also said that Britain’s ability to regulate the sector is limited because the biggest AI models are owned by US companies The official said: “The public message for parliament and the public has to be of concern and seeming like we’re acting. But in reality all that we can do is try and persuade the White House to include us in their frameworks.”

Interesting dispatch on the factors behind Piddington by @BlewettSam, who happened to bump into Kemi Badenoch when he was out there It raises the key Q - how will the government respond? And will it have to "make an example" of the village? politico.eu/article/rebellio…

Before Burnham’s meeting with Donald Trump, a senior govt figure noted wryly that they were looking out for one thing — whether the U.S. president would claim that Burnham was better than the last guy. In a cramped basement room in the UN, Trump did just that... My analysis ⬇️

They gave each other a free pass (on "fake news" and West Bank) and were on best behaviour — that's how these early meetings work But tensions were closer to the surface than on Starmer's first trip Chagos the headline, but AI arguably more fundamental politico.eu/article/andy-bur…

⛳️ Burnham on Trump "We talked about the Irish Open and golf and lots of other things" "I said I was having second thoughts about playing golf with him, given a recent performance of my own was probably not up to the right standard"
