Agreed. Gen Z needs to realize what people accepted as a normal first home in the 50s. In Newton, Iowa, it was about 1,000-1,500 sq ft, small living room, two small bedrooms, small bathroom, kitchen with a small dining table, no basement, no attic. Yes, you could afford to buy it working on the assembly line at Maytag Co (which payed good wages), and I played with friends in such houses without it crossing my mind that they were deprived. Good times in many ways. But the expectations were different.

Why do "lower-income" Americans have car payments? Growing up we had "beaters" because we were "lower-income." And even when I started at well-paying law firm, my car was used $3,000 one. Didn't have car payments for another 3 years once I got finances in order.
