I think rama was most probably a real person whose life later became a part of an folklore & became heavily mythicized.
You can find him in pretty much all Indian religious traditions be it Hinduism, Jainism or Buddhism.
Same goes for Krishna as well.
There is no single Ramayana.
Jain tellings: Lakshmana kills Ravana; Rama dies a monk.
Adbhuta: Sita, as Kali, kills a thousand-headed Ravana.
Khotan: Ravana is spared and taught the Dharma.

There's isn't a single religion that wasn't devoured by caste. From Buddhism to Islam and Christianity, in India caste infests all. If you are looking towards religion to annihilate caste you are anyway doing it wrong!
