Manufacturing is a key driver of India’s economy. Organised manufacturing that takes place mainly in factories accounts for 90% of the economic value created within manufacturing. As of 2023, India had around 200,000 operational factories, employing 18.5 million people. That’s nearly 30% of the manufacturing workforce and 3% of the total workforce. Factory employment can be broadly divided into three main categories - worker, managers, and others. Workers are employees in a factory who are directly involved with the manufacturing process, and may be directly employed by the factory, or indirectly through contractors. Managers and supervisors oversee the manufacturing process and workers. Other employees include those involved in administrative, technical and clerical functions. These could also include unpaid workers, who could be working proprietors or unpaid family members. Of the 18.5 million factory employees, a little under half are directly employed workers, while six million workers are employed through contractors. Factory employment has more than doubled over the last two decades. The fastest growth, however, was in contractual jobs, as contract workers doubled their share in India's factory employment, from 16% in 2001 to 32% in 2023. During the same period, the share of directly employed workers has declined from 61% to 47% in 2023. #Factories #Jobs #Manufacturing #Economy #India #DataForIndia
