When tech Twitter claims to have hacked learning, their one weird trick for saving time is often just to do LESS stuff — to teach math at shallower depth or to teach kids to negotiate their ideas with fewer other kids who differ from them in fewer ways.

So s/o to the teachers and schools and parents who are committed everyday to maintaining lofty goals for children's social and mathematical learning, doing a lot with what little they have, unbothered by people who believe it is a great accomplishment to do less with less.

We need a new metaphor for AI. Take a forklift to the gym and you don't look fit afterward. Use AI for your essay and to many eyes you DO look fit afterward.

I second this request for @mbateman, or some response from Alpha School! Anecdotes were fine a year ago, but it's odd they still haven't released anything more rigorous, to my knowledge.

This is true. I chose not to include @alphaschool's proprietary, unvalidated metric that swung 200% in one week at the end of the school year. This is public education, folks. You have to measure with the same yardstick as everyone else.

Here is new data that sheds light on @Alphaschool & their 2 Hour Learning project. Until now, we could only speculate—does Alpha make successful students or select them in advance?

According to a recent board presentation, Unbound Academy underperformed their targets by 83% and drastically underperformed the state average of 34%.

These results are only quasi-experimental. They aren't the last word on 2 Hour Learning, but they are the loudest. These results indicate that it is far harder to MAKE successful students than it is to SELECT them in advance. More here: danmeyer.substack.com/p/does…
