It has been a year since Alan Ra has died. He was our video editor at Emancipations. Alan and I were close. Alan was a Marxist, he was disabled, a musician, he struggled to find work, and he was gay, a member of the furry community. The only person I know who was a part of that community. But he never was one to fetishize his subversive identities, hell he rejected that entire idea. We spoke so clearly to one another all the time that his suicide took me by total surprise. While it may be true that “everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about,” the saying hits differently when you believe you understand something about the battles others are fighting. I take from this a lesson that we should not resign from knowing our friends battles on the presumption that we will never know them. Perhaps we should go deeper into them. And to that I can only offer my regret for not going deeper.
