ai has definitely become the street talk in vancouver. over the weekend i overheard and participated in many conversations around ai with random strangers what i like most is the attitude of seniors, they understand the progress is the next BIG leap forward their concerns weren’t focusing on the problems but talking about the solutions. one technical minded old man talked about the solution to AI energy is better design of electronics to prevent energy wastage at the source the other being an old man from italy who sings beautiful opera on the streets of Vancouver. I stopped to have a conversation about his music but he spoke about AI he was worried the world will end in 2030 and that instead of humans we’ll soon have robots walking the streets indistinguishable from humans. i explained to him those bots need to be trained by humans as out of the box AI is harmless, there is a lot of training that goes into getting AI to perform a certain way. he understood the concept and gave the most poetic analogy, “AI is then like a knife you can use it to slice bread or you can use it to kill someone.” he still thinks a bit of fear is important as it will make us participate in shaping the future. now how do you want to participate is the question do you want to cry about AI or do you want participate in making AI create abundance for all.
