JRPGs have a QoL problem, get rid of those like auto save, saving anywhere etc and you will get somewhere.
General audiences unfortunately have less patience for more interesting mechanics. Can you argue it's always been the case? Sure, the most popular JRPGs are pretty straightforward. However, even games 20+ years ago still kept most of their unique identity while shaking things up!
