Good Morning Google Land! This is the first edition of "Core Update Notes" for the August 2024 core update. And man, are we starting off in an interesting way. First, Google announced a ranking issue last night impacting a "large number of search results". So, what I present now could change... But I am seeing the first signs of HCU(X) sites recovering. One that was hit heavily by the Sep HCU(X) started surging back from the dead on 8/14, one day before the core update. See the first two screenshots below. I'm also seeing a site focused on gaming surge back a bit rankings-wise. Still early, but I'm seeing the site ranking for a bunch of queries it didn't rank for after the HCU(X)... Maybe we'll hear from them today. :) Beyond the HCU(X), housefresh.com seemed to have surged yesterday. See screenshots below. Manually checking the queries does reveal an increase in rankings there. They were impacted heavily by core updates and not the HCU(X), but interesting to see based on their blog posts about the situation. Stay tuned. I think we're in for a crazy ride with this update.

Working to improve CWV (hopefully more for users than SEO)? -> The Chrome Team launched changes to how INP was measured and that could have contributed to the positive trend in June's CrUX data And I am seeing a drop across several accounts in INP issues. See screenshot below for an example. “The Chrome team has been continuing work on improving efficiencies in Chrome’s handling of the Core Web Vitals metrics and recently launched some changes to INP which may have contributed to the positive trend this month. The most notable change is to better handle use of the basic modal dialogs (alert, confirm, print). While technically these are synchronous and block the main thread—and so are not recommended if there are alternatives—they do present user feedback for an interaction. They were previously not counted as presentation feedback for INP, which could result in very high INP values for sites that did use these. Again, excellent episode of SOTR with Elizabeth Tucker. I highly recommend listening. Several great nuggets of info in there. Like when speaking about Google's systems, Elizabeth explained she works on many systems and signals. Some definitely demote (think malicious download sites), but most systems are trying to find the good (promote). She also explained that in the past 4 word queries were considered long tail. Now you can find 20 word queries. The better Google gets, the more sophisticated the queries become.

Good Morning Google Land! Yep, it's back... :) I've had a number of people ask me to check my Sep HCU(X) data to see how those sites are performing with the latest volatility. So I ran the visibility numbers for 384 sites that were heavily impacted by the September HCU(X). Although some have seen some minor movement up during some of the recent tremors, all are down heavily over time. Again, the next core update could yield some recoveries for sites that have improved enough, but for now, the sites are still down heavily. I'll run the numbers again soon. Stay tuned.
