Gary Patterson is back calling the defense, and his core 4-2-5 system still offers a remedy against modern Spread attacks. Facing 3x1 sets from a pure Spread offense at San Jose State, Patterson's divorced front helped control space in the secondary without giving up box fits. USC used Patterson staples like "Special" to lock #1 and build Palms over the slots, or checks to "Solo" to poach the vertical route of #3 with the backside Safety to counter the Spartans' 3x1 sets. The most successful defenses are great at the following: - Alignment - Tackling - 3rd/4th Downs It is likely that on most every TD your team gives up this year, there will be a key play on the drive where you either misaligned, missed a tackle, or gave up a key 3rd/4th down.
