we bought an out of season candle
on severe discount
from a man with flies for eyes
and teeth advertising the winning numbers
to a powerball that had already drawn
later we poured the wax
made to smell like a data center’s
approximation of a nursing home apple pie
onto our vinyl record collection
it filled the channels that once made sound
and when it hardened
we took delight in the needle attempting
to find something familiar
that no longer existed
