Yes, a non-deranged leader deals with tail risk by ignoring it; if it starts to explode, call it a hoax; and if people die, keep the numbers down by not counting.
But studying risks that are highly improbable but potentially catastrophic? Making contingency plans? Insane!
Mark Carney might actually be the final boss of Trump Derangement Syndrome. He admitted that Canada has studied the "extreme tail risk" possibility of a U.S. military invasion.
Give it a rest, Mark. NO ONE wants to invade Canada. Honestly, your country is so far off the deep end right now that an invasion should be the last of your worries.
This is the exact same media hysteria we saw when they swore Trump was going to march troops into Greenland. And look what happened there.

If someone with Mark Carney's resume were the Great Conservative Hope, @brianlilley and @nspector4 and all the rest would denounce arguments like these as the small-minded, parochial prattle of partisans. And they'd be right.
We could also point out that most of his investments are in the US, his kids have been educated in the US, his wife works for an NYC based company and on and one but hey...elbows up with NYC based Mike Myers.

I....don't know what prompted this from the president today, but StatCan reported JUST this morning that in the past year, Canada experienced its slowest population growth since 1916. The country's population is essentially stalled right now.

Just before the Liberal leadership contest, I randomly met a veteran central banker at a party and asked him about Carney and he said he was one of the smartest people in the world but he'd never make it in electoral politics.

I have an idea: Maybe we should judge a plan only when the existence of the plan, and at least some of its details, are confirmed? And maybe we shouldn't go nuts in response to every vague rumour of a plan?
