i’ve written and deleted this about a hundred times now, and i still don’t think there are enough words in the world to describe what tonight meant to me. 🥹🤍
i think about the little girl i used to be a lot. the one growing up in rocinha, brazil, who didn’t always know where her next meal was coming from. the little girl who sometimes went to bed with an empty stomach because there simply wasn’t enough food to go around. who watched her mother stretch what little we had and somehow still find a way to make us feel like we had everything.
i remember those nights so vividly. the heat, the noise outside our windows, the sound of my family moving around our little home. i remember lying awake and imagining what life looked like beyond everything i knew. i used to dream about seeing the world, about wearing beautiful clothes, about being somebody. not because i was ashamed of where i came from, but because i wanted so desperately to know what else was out there for a girl like me.
and i remember being told that dreams like mine were too big.
when i immigrated from brazil to new york, i thought everything would magically become easier. spoiler alert: it didn’t. 😭
there were so many moments when i felt completely lost. i was in a new country, surrounded by unfamiliar faces, trying to learn how to navigate a world that didn’t always make room for girls like me. i had to grow up faster than i wanted to. i made mistakes. i trusted the wrong people. i lost myself more times than i’d ever care to admit.
there were times when i genuinely wondered if i’d ever become the woman i used to dream about being.
but somehow, someway, that little girl never stopped believing in me. even when i stopped believing in myself.
and tonight, i walked my very first victoria’s secret runway.
in wings. actual angel wings. 🥹🪽
i don’t think you understand how insane that sentence sounds to me.
the same little girl who once dreamed about what the world looked like outside her neighborhood now gets to fly across it. i’ve been on planes to places i couldn’t even pronounce when i was younger. i’ve stood in rooms i once only saw on television. i’ve met people, experienced things, and lived moments that younger me wouldn’t have believed were possible.
and tonight, as i stood backstage waiting for my cue, i thought about her.
i thought about that little girl in brazil.
i thought about my mother.
i thought about every single version of myself that had to survive so i could stand there.
and when they finally told me it was time to walk, i swear i almost cried before i even stepped onto the runway. 😭
because for a moment, it wasn’t about the cameras, the beautiful lingerie, the lights, or even the wings.
it was about realizing that i had become somebody my younger self would’ve looked up to.
and that means more to me than any title ever could.
to @ victoriassecret, thank you for trusting me with such a beautiful collection and allowing me to experience something i’ve dreamed about for so long. to every single person backstage who made me feel beautiful, comfortable, and worthy of being there, thank you. you have no idea how much your kindness meant to me.
and to my people. oh, my people. 🥹
@dieselstep and
@valliegirllll . where do i even begin with you two?
first of all, thank you for putting up with my dramatic ass because i genuinely don’t know how either of you have managed to do it for this long. LMFAOOO. 😭
but seriously, thank you for loving me through every version of myself. for listening to me complain about the same things a hundred different times, for telling me when i’m being ridiculous, for making me laugh when i feel like crying, and for constantly reminding me that i’m capable of so much more than i give myself credit for.
