Being at the @AGRA_Africa Food Systems Forum 2026 in Kigali gave me the opportunity to listen closely to the conversations shaping the future of agriculture across Africa. My biggest takeaway from #AFSF2026? Africa does not lack ideas, technology or ambition. The bigger challenge is turning those ideas into systems that can work at scale and ultimately create more value for farmers. Three things stood out to me. 1. Farmer-level data is becoming critical infrastructure. Investment, traceability, sustainability, compliance, access to finance and market access all depend increasingly on knowing what is actually happening on the ground. 2. Digital agriculture is moving beyond “another app.” The real opportunity is building digital infrastructure that connects farmers with cooperatives, agribusinesses, institutions and markets while working within the realities of African agriculture. 3. Technology should strengthen existing systems. Africa already has farmers, cooperatives, aggregators and organizations doing important work. Digital transformation should help these systems become more connected, visible and efficient not force them to start from zero. This is one reason I find @Dimitratech ’s recent Connected Farmer Community and Cooperative Editions particularly interesting. The focus is practical: helping farmers and agricultural organizations map farms, maintain records, manage activities and build reliable farm-level data. That data can then become the foundation for bigger opportunities around traceability, sustainability, compliance, reporting and market access. For me, this is the bigger picture: Connect the farmer to the data. Connect the data to the organization. Connect the organization to the market.
