Our specialty boards like ABIM should have directly elected directors and presidents by diplomates, with limited terms. Possibly even merged with specialty societies (like ACP). This racket is almost universally hated by physicians and membership is nonvoluntary.

Could not agree more. But then, that’s not the “Chicago Way” is it?

In orthopaedics, a recent study looked at the total costs of ten year MOC / re-certification to be more than $70,000. It is time consuming and expensive. Achieving Initial certification matters greatly, but four recert cycles in a career costs us north of $280,000!!!

Worst of all, there is no improved quality or patient care safety with ongoing payments to this ABMS-sponsored racket. Another factoid: authors of a large body of studies promoting this ruse have median Medicare billings of $0. drwes.blogspot.com/2014/10/r…

Precisely. It’s never been about education, but rather money, data, and control.

Dr. Fisher - in my discussion with hospital admin they say the stumbling block with NBPAS is that payers in Indiana do not recognize NBPAS and hence patients won’t be able to see a physician not boarded by ABIM. You think this is accurate?

NBPAS satisfies all rules outlined by law for recertification. The rest is pre-negotiated market manipulation by insurers, hospitals, and members of the ACGME in my humble opinion.

Agree with this @doctorwes. ABIM is a racket and does not appear to improve patient care.

Physicians might ask if they trust @nbpasadvocacy vs the MOC process

FAIL to PAY the ABP, and you are no longer “in good standing” and will be unable to continue caring for your hospitalized patients because you are now no longer “certified”. One day you’re rounding in the hospital, and the next you are… doctorsonsocialmedia.com/?p=… via @SoMeDocs

Difficult battle with insurance carriers requiring certification, our medical staff committee locally won’t approve waiving MOC/alternate NBPAS as solution

Thanks for this post. I will see if this can be presented to our medical staff with the goal of getting this accepted by our credentialing committee.
