OGUN STATE NYSC ORIENTATION CAMP: A NATIONAL DISGRACE THAT DEMANDS IMMEDIATE
The disturbing reports emerging from the Ogun State NYSC Orientation Camp regarding the poor treatment of prospective corps members are unacceptable and deserve urgent intervention from the relevant authorities.
It is not right that young Nigerians who have sacrificed their time, travelled from different parts of the country and responded to the call to national service are being subjected to such inhumane and embarrassing conditions. Reports indicate that many prospective corps members were asked to return home because the camp allegedly lacked sufficient space to accommodate them. Those who were fortunate enough to gain admission were reportedly left struggling for sleeping spaces, with some sleeping outside, inside the orientation hall and even in storage areas.
How can a national programme responsible for receiving thousands of graduates fail to make adequate preparations for their arrival? Was the number of prospective corps members not known beforehand? Why were sufficient accommodation, sanitation and other essential facilities not provided?
We must ask the Ogun State NYSC Coordinator and the relevant authorities some serious questions. Who is responsible for this failure of planning? Were the funds allocated for the orientation exercise properly utilised? If the state received funding based on the expected number of corps members, what happens to the money when some of these young Nigerians are turned back because of inadequate facilities? Will the unspent funds be properly accounted for and refunded to NYSC? Nigerians deserve answers, transparency and accountability, not silence.
Furthermore, forcing prospective corps members to return home because of inadequate accommodation raises serious concerns about the planning, management and financial accountability of the scheme. This is not a minor administrative inconvenience; it is a failure that directly affects the welfare, dignity and safety of young Nigerians.
Unfortunately, Ogun State is not the only state reportedly experiencing these challenges. Similar complaints have emerged from other orientation camps across the country. This clearly suggests that the problem requires national attention rather than isolated responses.
We therefore call on the NYSC Director-General, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and all relevant authorities to immediately investigate the Ogun State situation, establish accountability and ensure that appropriate action is taken against anyone found responsible.
More importantly, NYSC must urgently improve accommodation, healthcare, sanitation, feeding, security and other essential facilities across all 36 states and the FCT.
Corps members are not second-class citizens. They deserve respect, decent living conditions and proper care. National service should be an opportunity to serve the country, not an experience of unnecessary suffering and humiliation.
The welfare of corps members must never be treated as an afterthought. Enough is enough!
