There’s a reason autonomous cars are electric.

Today, we’re launching an ambitious new school called The Horowitz Andreessen Academy. Based in San Francisco, The Academy serves the most promising young high school graduates. We think this can be an elite institution that attracts top tier talent. One that prepares students for the future rather than remaining stuck in the past. The #1 goal is to help students learn to build, which is the most important skill in the AI era. They'll learn primarily by pursuing their own projects, either individually or in groups. There are classes and guest lectures, too, from some truly amazing people who have built modern-day Silicon Valley. The Academy is designed as a network, since that’s the reason students go to school in the first place. Core to that network are our 10 Founding Partners: Anduril, Anthropic, Coinbase, Google, Meta, NVIDIA, OpenAI, Palantir, Replit, and Stripe. The network includes over 50 hiring partners and over 200 speakers and mentors. To join as a hiring partner or faculty member, you can apply on our website. We raised $42M in funding led by @a16z. I'll be CEO and @pmarca and @eriktorenberg will join me on the board. Applications are open for our Founding Class Fellowship, which will be one year and tuition-free. Eventually, pending regulatory approval, we plan to offer a two-year program that charges tuition, similar in cost to an elite private university. We're looking for the most unusually ambitious young builders on the planet. Come join us in San Francisco: theacademysf.com/

Adoption of self-driving will happen faster than you think. My kids will not drive. People fight this take because they project personal preferences. "People love driving, they won't give it up." Insurers don't care. They price risk. The cost of insuring a shrinking population of people who text at 70mph and drive after four beers will be astronomical. You will have to pay more (a lot more) for that privilege to choose to be unsafe. And most people won't.
Swiss Re, one of the world’s leading reinsurers, found that Waymo's autonomous vehicles generated 88% fewer property damage claims and 92% fewer bodily injury claims than human-driven vehicles. humanprogress.org/waymo-driv…

Sailors used to throw logs overboard, attached to lines with knots tied at regular intervals. The # of knots that passed through a sailor’s hands within a given amt. of time helped determine the ship’s speed. Now, 1 knot = 1 nautical mph. 🧵⬇️

There's a term for this. It's called the "greater fool theory." And it's a great way to lose a lot of money in a bubble.
Had a growth investor at a very well respected VC firm tell me (in all sincerity and honesty), “My job isn’t to find great companies, it’s to find companies that will be marked up. TBH, what happens to these companies long-term doesn’t really matter.”

Texas is now our biggest market. Not what most people would guess when they hear electric boats.

Electrical power is becoming combat power. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle released C-NOte #10 on directed energy and addressed the Directed Energy Symposium yesterday in National Harbor, Maryland. “For too long, we have viewed directed energy as an emerging technology rather than an operational capability. That must change,” Caudle wrote. MORE: navytimes.com/news/your-navy…

AGI is cool and all, but...
Tug Log: Tiger C is officially in the water. Our second electric tug splashed this week at Snow & Company, Inc. in Seattle, marking another milestone for Arc's commercial vessels. Up next: batteries and power cabinets. Meanwhile, Tuuli C (our first tug) is entering final integration across the yard and will start sea trials later this year. As the fleet takes shape, our commercial team is growing, too. If you're interested in joining the crew, check out our open roles → arcboats.com/careers#commerc…

SpaceX has introduced a new @Starlink Maritime plan for small boat owners called "Personal Maritime." Personal Maritime keeps you connected on the water as you move between countries, without the 30-day Roam travel limit. • $185/month USD • Unlimited data and use in territorial waters worldwide • Ocean Mode available beyond 12 nautical miles for $6/GB • No 30-day Roam international travel limit, except in extremely rare cases when required by local regulations This plan is for small personal vessels—not yachts or commercially operated vessels (including ferries and commercial fishing)-and is not intended for use on land.

We need reliable power. If only there was a cracked team working on that...
The Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer USS Benfold (DDG-65) suffered an engineering casualty affecting its power-generation system on July 24 while conducting routine operations in the South China Sea with the USS George Washington (CVN-73) Carrier Strike Group. The casualty resulted in a complete loss of power for four days, during which the George Washington Carrier Strike Group provided essential support to the destroyer, including meals, until Benfold was able to reach Subic Bay, Philippines, for repairs. During the outage, the Benfold had limited potable water and no galley, restrooms and climate control. Benfold subsequently returned to its homeport of Yokosuka, Japan, on August 12, as seen in imagery from @Gov_Vessel_fan.

My favorite capture of the night: The moment the moon's shadow split the sunset in half, leaving a diamond ring in the sky and a breathtaking view. I call it "Shadows on the Balearic Sea". I'll have prints available for this one linked in my bio for a few days only.

Marine powertrains are very concentrated. But that concentration is currently split by power level, because a 400hp and a 4,000hp combustion system have almost nothing in common. Moving from mechanical to electrical architectures changes that. A 400hp and 4,000hp electric system use a similar voltage class, battery and thermal architecture, etc. and can share firmware, controls, and telemetry. It's structurally set up for even greater concentration.
