Treaty 7 was signed in 1877 between the Crown and the Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, Tsuut’ina, and Stoney Nakoda Nations. Indigenous Nations and the Crown held different understandings of the agreement: Indigenous oral histories emphasize peace, sharing the land, and maintaining relationships, while the Crown interpreted the written treaty as a surrender of land. These differing understandings, along with unfulfilled treaty promises, have had lasting impacts on Treaty 7 Nations. Treaty 7 remains a living agreement with rights and responsibilities that continue today. Treaty 7 Day reminds us that colonialism is ongoing and we have a responsibility to uphold treaty rights. Powley Day commemorates the landmark 2003 Supreme Court of Canada decision in R. v. Powley, which affirmed that Métis harvesting rights are protected under Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982. The case, brought forward by Steve and Roddy Powley of the Sault Ste. August 23, 2026, marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6, an agreement between First Nations and the Crown that continues to shape relationships across what is now Saskatchewan, Alberta, and parts of Manitoba. Communities will gather at Fort Carlton Provincial Historic Park, where Treaty 6 was first negotiated and signed in 1876, to recognize this significant anniversary through cultural programming, performances, treaty education, and community events. As part of the commemoration, Métis artist and Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund Ambassador @MichelleJoly alongside Peter Cameron and lyricist Laurie Shaw-Greyeyes of @gen7canada released the song “1876” on July 31.
