What an incredible experience it was to Organise and Chair our pilot - Emotional Intelligence (EI) training for future leaders in psychiatry - on behalf of the SED RCPsych.
You don’t want to miss some of the key highlights from the session. The last one is my favourite!
>>Around Fifty people attended our event, and I am glad we made some impact in increasing their confidence in using EI skills, as evidenced in the qualitative and quantitative feedback. It was lovely to see some familiar faces at the training!!
>>One key question discussed was whether doctors should take on leadership roles. What do you think? If the answer is yes, what skills do they need to develop? The focus was on enhancing EI competencies, which are vital for navigating the complexities of leadership.
>>During the session, Dr Chetna Kang
@ChetnaKang highlighted an important aspect of conflict resolution—disagreement itself doesn’t cause problems; rather, it is the tone and delivery of the disagreement that perpetuates conflict. She also helped participants reflect on three mindsets in conflict: win-win, win-lose, and lose-lose. By adopting a win-win mindset, we can foster better networking and conflict resolution.
>> Dr Billy Boland
@DrBillyBoland made a key distinction between Sympathy, which is feeling sorry FOR someone, and a more powerful skill - Empathy, which is about feeling WITH the person. He also made us aware of the privileges we may have, encouraging us to view situations from others’ perspectives and to be mindful of colleagues’ cultural needs, which can significantly enhance their performance at work.
>>Dr Rais Irfan Ahmed
@drraisirfan emphasised that doctors have a choice: they can either live their professional lives comfortably seeing patients and complaining about poor leadership, or they can step up, develop the EI skills required for leadership, and be the ones driving change for patients on a global scale.
>>The feedback from the session was overwhelmingly positive, with one consistent message: there is a demand for this type of training, and we need more time for it, especially for the group discussions—perhaps a full-day, face-to-face event next time.
Special thanks to RCPsych Events Manager, Michael
