Interesting that he’s willing to be a white belt in mma but not in Jiu Jitsu anymore. Has Mikey optimized his Jiu Jitsu so much that he lost the joy of doing it? He’s obviously had a successful career. Maybe he never enjoyed it. He’s openly admitted that fear of losing drives him to find the fastest, most efficient way to win within the rules. That's a hellacious ritual. This is not what you want to cultivate as a casual grappler.
Mikey Musumeci guarantees he will make his MMA debut this year: “I really want to do this. I’m 30 years old. I don’t have that much time left in my life to compete like this, so I don’t want any what-ifs. I’m loving the MMA training. I’m addicted to it. I want to see how far I can go. I kind of like being the underdog and having to work my way up and being a student of the game again. I love feeling like I’m a white belt again. I have to learn.”

You need physical work because you were a body before you had a mind. The mind should never be master of the body. Most problems of the body are caused by a mind that has slipped the leash of the body. Obesity, neglect, sloth are all due to minds that have lost touch with the wisdom of the body and its sense-making.

If someone is reading your mount escapes, don’t force your way out. Let them attack. Let them move toward S mount, but never let them fit the groove perfectly. Overfit it or underfit it so the position never settles cleanly. When an experienced player is reading you, you have to accept the next movement instead of forcing the current one. You’re not waiting to defend the armbar or triangle once it arrives. You’re disrupting the S mount groove that allows those submissions to develop. Stop the shape before it becomes a technique, read how badly they want it, and use their commitment to escape. Stop fighting the individual submission. Manipulate the groove underneath it. This escape feels like teleporting. It takes little effort: accept the pin, redirect the energy, and spin underneath. when you get the timing right, it feels like you're teleporting. Learn Jiu Jitsu Full guide out now

At some point you have to stop explaining and just roll with the locals. stop studying the language, go speak it. This young blue belt has a good intuitive feel for Jiu Jitsu. He can read, respond, surprise me, and stay in the exchange long enough to reach a flow state. I’m attacking, catching and releasing, staying ahead without forcing where the roll goes. The possibilities are real. He can catch me, and I can feel how close he is. This is how I think about teaching. Stop constantly explaining Jiu Jitsu or putting your interpretation between the student and the experience. Roll with them. Give them contact with the givens and let them learn to read the primary text for themselves. I don’t tell him what to see. I keep the exchange alive long enough that he can see it for himself. When both people can keep reading, rolling teaches on its own. Learn Jiu Jitsu More info on the givens in my guide

Obvious yet hidden back attack basics. The submission is obvious. The hang isn't. Hanging keeps you from using willpower to force the finish. Anchor in with your whole body and maintain the tension, let that tension tell you what to do. Stop forcing your way through one move. Hang long enough to feel what they are giving you. If you want a deeper understanding of Hang, I break it all down in my guide. Out now Learn Jiu Jitsu
