Today, I’m going to give you ten years of healing in a couple of minutes. I'm a brain surgeon, and I'm gonna show you how to make rapid progress in healing the wounds you’ve been carrying; the ones from childhood, from broken relationships, from things said that can’t be unsaid, and from things done that can’t be undone. Let's scrub in and get it done. Here's a Fact: Your Wound Lives in Your Brain, But Your Healing Lives in Your Mind When something hurts you, your brain stores it. The sights, the sounds, the sting of the words, the shape of the moment. That storage is real and physical. But here’s where the hope of healing lies: your brain doesn’t get the final vote on what that memory means to you. Your mind does. And your mind is not the same thing as your brain. Neuroscience nugget: Emotional memories get encoded in circuits involving the amygdala and hippocampus, but each time you recall a memory, it becomes temporarily unstable and gets rewritten via a process called reconsolidation. That means every time you revisit a wound, you have a fresh chance to change how it’s stored. Self-Brain Surgery Procedure: The next time an old wound surfaces, don’t just relive it. Instead, reframe it while it’s “open.” Ask: What is the truest, most redemptive way to understand this moment now? Speak that new understanding out loud before you let the memory close back up. Scripture: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3, NIV This is self-brain surgery. Hard and holy work. Follow me to connect neuroscience and scripture every day. Save this to help when you need to heal. Share it with a friend who's hurting. Click the link in my bio to learn more about The Life-Changing Art of Self-Brain Surgery, my NYT bestselling book. Another great follow, @RyanHoliday . Where I use scripture for most of my guidance, he uses stoicism, but you can count on him for great book recommendations and daily wisdom. I've been reading Ryan since his first book came out, and have learned so much from him.
Some ways to find stillness right now: - Go for a solo nature walk - Write in a journal - Lock into a creative activity - Vigorous exercise: run laps, swim - Help someone else

Today's follow recommendation! Brilliant.
Atheists sometimes tell me I have to choose between God and science. I do not, and neither do you. There is nothing anti-scientific about the idea that an all-powerful, transcendent super-intelligence created the universe and wrote its laws. In fact, it's far more believable to me that this is the explanation for our lawful, intelligible universe than the story I was expected to believe as an atheist - that the universe "just is" or that it's somehow lawful and intelligible despite having no intelligence or will behind it. But what about the big bang? Is that a problem for a Bible-believing Christian? Not at all. Leave aside the age issue - which is frankly the least explosive part of all this - and consider how modern science has caught up with the Genesis narrative in the last 100 years. Modern science has figured out that the universe isn't eternal, as people thought for thousands of years, but suddenly came into being a finite time ago just as Genesis 1:1 describes. I do not have to give up God to believe that. In fact, as a scientist, it's the only way I can make sense of why the universe exists at all and is the way it is. Don't let anyone tell you that you have to choose between God's two books - the Bible and his creation. They are wonderfully compatible.

Stop waiting to live your own life! The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is right now. And hear this: the most ready you will ever be is this moment. Every day you wait, you hand your brain another reason to stay still. But every day you begin, you start building a different life. That's Self-Brain Surgery. Your mind decides. Your brain follows. "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing." Isaiah 43:18-19 Leave a comment if you're ready to lock in.

Good morning, my brain-building friend. Start today with quiet, prayer/meditation, and focus on telling your brain what you expect of it today. Your mind decides. Your brain follows. Self-Brain Surgery starts before the first thought of the day gets to run the show. "In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly." Psalm 5:3 You only get this day once. Let's scrub in and get after it!

The thought that makes you wait is usually some version of "it's too late." Your brain loves a finished story. Too old. Too stuck. Missed the window. But that is a rehearsal, not a fact. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is right now. And the youngest you will ever be is this moment. Self-Brain Surgery move: out loud, "That thought is not me. I start today." Then do one small thing for two minutes. "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing." Isaiah 43:18-19 Good night. Plant the tree tomorrow morning. 🙏

Brain surgeon question: What thought makes you wait to start that thing you know you're called to do? Too late? Too old? Not ready? Something else? Drop it below. Tonight I'll share the Self-Brain Surgery move I use when that lie shows up.

Feelings are not facts. They’re chemical events in your brain. Most of what you automatically feel doesn’t turn out to be true. If you learn to question the feeling before you react, look at it like a scientist, and operate on it like a surgeon, you separate yourself from 99% of the people struggling in work, marriage, dating, and every other area of life. Physiology doesn’t always tell the true story: Sometimes it’s dangerous. Sometimes it’s accurate. But not every time. Before you react, question it.
Separate feelings from facts.
Operate on your brain so it stops operating on you. Say it with me: “I must believe that feelings are not facts. They are chemical events in my brain.” That’s the second commandment of self-brain surgery.

I learn a lot from @SahilBloom . My only pushback to this post as a brain surgeon would be that yes, spend time with your friends and not alone, but you do not need alcohol to do that. We know that alcohol is a major contributor to at least seven human cancers, and that there is no safe level of use that does not directly damage brain cells, and there is zero health benefit to alcohol. So have both, friends and health. You don't need alcohol for either.
Hot take (that shouldn’t be that hot): You can have a drink now and then with your friends and still be a healthy person. Too many people traded drinks with friends for social media doomscrolling, porn, and gambling by themselves.

This is a great explanation of what Jesus said the Holy Spirit will do for us.
When you study the Bible and become familiar with what is written, the Holy Spirit can begin to plug those verses, passages and concepts into your mind, in real time, while you’re handling life situations, and if you listen, this is how you are molded to the character of Christ

Brain Surgeon: I've held hundreds of brains. I've never found the person in one. The brain is the instrument. You are the mind that plays it. When you change what you rehearse, you change what your brain gets good at. That's Self-Brain Surgery. "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 Follow for more of this every day. Part 2 tomorrow: the one question that proves you're not just your thoughts.

When your mind keeps spinning worst-case stories, your amygdala takes the wheel. That's the alarm system. It is great at sounding the siren and terrible at solving the problem. Your frontal lobes, the part that plans and chooses, get quieter every time you rehearse the spiral. Ask one question out loud: "What if it works out?" Then name one true thing and one thing you're grateful for. That's Self-Brain Surgery. David knew this long before brain scans: "When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy." Psalm 94:19. Operate on it today. The next time worry starts writing the script, interrupt it with "What if it works out?" and turn the knob toward gratitude. Which worry keeps stealing your peace? Comment it, save this for the spiral, and send it to someone who needs a better rehearsal.

Before you sleep, give your mind one job: Rehearse one true thing and one grateful thing. Worry trains your brain for danger. Gratitude trains it for peace. "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety." Psalm 4:8 Good night. 🙏

It's not woo-woo or magic- it's design! Limbic resonance, mirror neurons, heart math, quantum entanglement, and blessings.
it might sound woo woo, but radiating positive energy is the closest thing to magic i've found. tip generously, compliment strangers, share your knowledge with no expectation of anything in return. give like you have more than enough, and eventually you’ll find that you do.
