Start here: My mental health threads, sorted : 1. Indian Cultural context -Indian men don't get depressed. They get "stressed," "tired," "busy." Same thing, different mask. x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -"Log kya kahenge" has killed more conversations than illnesses x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -Indian marriages don't break people, the silence inside them does x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -Your mother isn't "adjusting." She's suffering, quietly, on schedule x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -I read a letter an Indian family wrote after losing someone to suicide. Every family should read it too x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -In Indian households, anger is never just anger. It's the only emotion we're allowed to show. x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… 2. Understanding Conditions -Bipolar isn't "mood swings." It's two different diseases wearing one name x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -OCD isn't about being clean. It's about being terrified of your own mind x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -PTSD doesn't need a war. A childhood can do it too x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -Panic attacks feel like dying. Here's what's actually happening in your body.x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -Anxiety isn't "just in your head." Your body knows before you do x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -Some people are depressed and still show up to work, gym, and dinner. That's the dangerous kind x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -"Just do self-care" is the worst advice you can give someone who's depressed. Here's why x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -Deepika Padukone said she didn't know she was depressed. That's more common than you think.x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -Parveen Babi was called "mad." She had schizophrenia. Bollywood never apologised x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… 3. Family and parenting -Someone you love has a mental illness. Here's what actually helps, not what you assume helps x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -Your child already knows something's wrong. Silence just teaches them to hide it too. x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -The first 7 years of a child's life quietly decide their mental health for the next 70 x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… 4. Life stages and crisis -If someone you love is thinking about ending their life, read this before you say anything. x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -Teenagers today aren't "dramatic." Something has actually changed x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -Your job might be the thing quietly wearing you down. Here's how to tell x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -Nobody prepares you for grief. Here's what I wish someone had told me x.com/drparthnagda/status/20… -That "one drink to relax" habit has a pattern. Depression in Indian men rarely looks like crying or sadness. It looks like something else entirely. After years of sitting across from men who "just came for stress" — here's what I've actually seen. 🧵

What is a Delusion? 1/5 A patient was completely convinced his neighbour was spying on him. No amount of evidence changed his mind. This is a delusion. This is a fixed, false belief held with complete conviction inspite of clear, direct evidence to the contrary.

4/5 Delusions are a symptom of an underlying condition such as : 1) Psychotic disorders: Schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, and brief psychotic disorder. 2) Mood disorders: Bipolar disorder (during severe manic or depressive episodes) and major depressive disorder with psychotic features. 3)Neurodegenerative conditions: Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, and Parkinson’s disease. 4)Acute medical conditions: Delirium (often triggered by severe infections, metabolic imbalances, or organ failure), encephalitis, and brain tumors or traumatic brain injuries. 5) Substance-related: Intoxication or withdrawal from substances

5/5 Arguing/ ignoring/yelling/ avoiding rarely helps, but psychiatric treatment often does. If someone you know holds a belief this fixed, this resistant to evidence it's worth a psychiatric evaluation

Behavioural or Process Addictions! 1/ Process addiction is often not taken as seriously as it should be. Gambling, gaming, porn, and compulsive phone use can trigger the exact same craving-tolerance-withdrawal loop as substance addictions, just without a chemical substance

3/Withdrawal symptoms are seen like irritability, escalating time or intensity needed for the same "hit," and failed attempts to cut back. The pattern mirrors substance addiction closely.

4/These respond to similar treatment principles as substance addictions, that is understanding triggers, building alternative coping methods, and sometimes structured therapy and sometimes medications if needed If a behaviour has started controlling your time, mood, or decisions the way a substance would, that's worth a look

Cognitive Reframing for Anxiety 1/Same event. 2 people. One spirals, one doesn't. The difference is the thought process Boss sends a text: "Let's talk tomorrow at 11." On assumes they're getting fired, Another assumes it's about a new project. Same email. Opposite reactions.
1
70
3/The event itself is neutral, the mind fills the blank with the scariest possible story. The fix isn't forced positivity. It's asking: what's the most likely explanation, not the scariest one. Most "let's talk tomorrow" texts are not what anxiety assumes them to be.

4/ Try this next time your mind jumps to the worst case: name the fear, then list two more likely explanations. This alone interrupts the spiral. You're not overreacting to the situation. You're reacting to the story your mind told about it ,and that story can be rewritten.

1/ Blackouts in alcohol addiction A patient held a full conversation , walked home, sent messages after a night of heavy drinking He remembered none of it the next morning. This is a blackout, and it's more dangerous than passing out. Read on to know more

3/ During a blackout, a person can drive, agree to things, or put themselves in dangerous situations, all while appearing completely normal to others. Repeated blackouts are a significant warning sign of a developing alcohol use disorder, not just "a heavy night" that happens occasionally.

4/ They're often minimised "I just don't remember much" when in reality there is a genuine gap in brain function during active substance use. If blackouts have happened more than once, that's worth discussing honestly with a professional. This is a pattern, not bad luck.

Withdrawal symptoms in addiction 1/ Sweating, shaking, irritable, unable to sleep, 2 days after stopping alcohol. Family members assumed it was the flu. It was withdrawal. Withdrawal is the body's physical revolt when a substance it has adapted to is suddenly removed.

3/Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal, in particular, require supervised management, not a quiet at-home attempt to quit. The fear of withdrawal is one of the biggest reasons people continue using. breaking that cycle safely usually requires medical support.

4/ If stopping a substance has ever brought on physical symptoms that felt disproportionate or frightening, that needs medical guidance, seek help from your nearby psychiatrist. It is not a journey to be attempted solo.
