Education policy has two camps. Both are wrong. @tracewoodgrains, founder of @educprogress, live at Manifest: "For a long time in the United States, education policy has been fitting around a one size fits all narrative... everyone understands on some level that kids learn at different paces, but education policy has wanted to treat this as a third rail." "One crowd says, 'Remove all standards, remove standardized tests, remove the advanced programs.' The other says, 'We should have a high flat standard'... that's the No Child Left Behind ethos. We will get everyone up to this flat standard by 2014. And the problem is that's just nonsense." "What we're focused on is how can you meet kids where they are at... test them, teach to their actual level rather than having some hypothetical standard of what a kid this age should know."

Great episode. A lot of the problems in education are ideologically driven, but some are simple mistakes of fact. Making it easier for qualified students to take advanced classes serves the public interest.

The excellence of America’s youth has been systematically suppressed by the institutions whose explicit job is to develop it.
