I cheated on my husband once, eight years ago.
One night.
One terrible decision during a work trip that I have regretted ever since.
He never confronted me.
So I convinced myself he never knew.
We built a life after that.
Two kids. A house. Sunday breakfasts. School runs. Arguments about money. Late-night conversations when the kids were finally asleep.
Normal life.
But sometimes I’d catch my husband watching me, and I’d wonder if he somehow knew.
Then I’d tell myself I was being paranoid.
Until last month.
It was a Saturday morning.
My husband was cleaning out an old cabinet in our bedroom when he called my name.
Not loudly.
Just once.
“Can you come here?”
Something about his voice made my stomach drop.
I walked into the room.
He was sitting on the floor with an old folder in his hands.
“What is that?”
He looked at me for a long time.
Then he asked:
“Do you remember that hotel in Chicago?”
I couldn’t breathe.
I hadn’t heard that name in eight years.
