My time at @FacultyITC showed me how easily departments hide behind “budget cuts” and “reorganisation” while isolating, restricting access to our budgets, denying opportunities, and silencing those who speak up. Postdocs and staff deserve better.

A new #EOSsg study finds Bandung, Indonesia, is the most exposed city overall to volcanic hazards, with nearly 9M people living near 12 volcanoes. Jakarta has the largest exposed population, Naples has the most people closest to a volcano, and San Salvador has the greatest number of nearby volcanoes. Read more: bit.ly/3WpnSQg. #LearningWithEOS

Volcanologists #NTUsg Assoc Prof Susanna Jenkins from @EOS_SG and Dr Elinor Meredith, Research Fellow from @FacultyITC at the University of Twente, talk to MoneyFM about their extensive study on the frequency and severity of lava flow impact events and how they affect communities, after studying written records which date back to the 1800s. ntu.sg/LavaFlows  #NTUsgResearch

Lava flows from volcanic eruptions threaten surrounding communities. A study led by #EOSsg and @ntu_ase explores the frequency and severity of past lava flow impact events, which refer to impacts during a stage of effusive activity where at least one lava flow impacted the built environment (buildings and/or infrastructure). Find out what they discovered: bit.ly/4dt5MmO #InVEST_EOS #FactFriday

We have ~9-10 months funding for a remote postdoc to work on quantitative volcanic risk assessment. Ideally with experience in physical vulnerability to volcanic hazards, and python. Please spread the word and, for those interested, tell us more here: forms.gle/yu47fSMcaRb2D3Qd6

Loved writing this piece on Tour de France and volcanoes 🌋🚴 geo-sports.org/2024/stage-11…
Today on stage 11 the race traverses through the scenic volcanic field of Chaîne des Puys where we raced in 2023 as well. These volcanoes erupted periodically between ~90,000 and ~8,500 years ago forming the landforms you see today. This volcanic field is currently considered extinct. That’s quite a relief. However, for today’s blog post, let’s consider if there was to be an eruption in the future. Let's take the Extreme Weather Protocol to the very extreme and look into a fiery future. Could you ride away from a volcanic eruption? @elinormere of @facultyitc takes you on an exciting, fiery journey of what ifs. #TDF2024 #GeoTDF geo-sports.org/2024/stage-11… @knag @UUGeo @UniUtrecht @TNO_nieuws

New-ish paper by @elinormere compiling all lava flow impacts into one space to analyse spatio-temporal trends and patterns in how lava flows impact society. Congrats Elinor! Also with @joshhayesdrr, @davidlallemant, Natalia Deligne, Natalie Teng.
This article compiles and standardises lava flow impact information from previously compiled data, eruption records and published literature to create the first comprehensive global dataset of impacts on the built environment from lava flows. doi.org/10.1186/s13617-023-0… #volcanology
