Moses Matovu gave Uganda music that did more than entertain us. He gave us songs that became part of our language, our humour, our memories and, sometimes, our own personal stories.
For me, #OliMujjawaMusajjaAsingaNze became one of those songs. It became part of the soundtrack of my campaign to represent the Uganda Law Society on the Judicial Service Commission.
There was something about that song that fitted the journey perfectly: confidence, humour, mischief, even a little swagger. And through it all, unmistakably, Moses Matovu.
And you cannot really speak about Moses Matovu without speaking about Afrigo Band. Afrigo became more than a band. It became an institution, a keeper of memories, one of those rare threads running through generations of Ugandan life. Parents danced to Afrigo. Their children danced to Afrigo. And somehow, through changing times, changing tastes and changing generations, the music endured.
That was part of Moses Matovu’s remarkable gift. He did not simply make music for his own generation. He helped create music that outlived moments, fashions and seasons. A song written years ago could suddenly find itself on a campaign trail, at a wedding, on a long drive, or in the middle of a conversation among friends, sounding as alive as ever.
That is what great musicians do. They write the song, and then they give it away to the rest of us. We carry it into our own lives and attach it to our own memories.
Today, Uganda has lost one of those men.
And today, the question belongs to him.
Oli mujawa, omusajja asinga oyo.
Rest well, Moses Matovu. Afrigo will play on. And so will the music.
