🚨A Florida grand jury has concluded that Gov. Ron DeSantis’s administration ran a scheme to divert $10 million meant for uninsured children into Republican political coffers. No one has been criminally charged. The money originated from a $67 million Medicaid settlement Florida reached with Centene in 2024, after the company was accused of overcharging state Medicaid programs for prescription drugs nationwide. While $57 million went back to taxpayers, the remaining $10 million was funneled to the Hope Florida Foundation, a charity founded by DeSantis’s wife, Casey, that was supposed to help poor children access health coverage. Within days, according to the grand jury, Hope Florida had passed half the money to the right-wing group Secure Florida’s Future and the other half to Save Our Society From Drugs. That funding ultimately helped defeat a 2024 ballot measure to legalize recreational marijuana in Florida. The grand jury found no one could be charged, reporting that “nobody will take responsibility” for the decision and that no one claimed any memory of who made it. Jurors noted that any official justification for routing the money through Hope Florida “was rendered moot” by the fact that it sat in the charity’s account for only a couple of days before moving on. DeSantis has called the findings a “lie” and threatened that whoever leaked the report committed a “crime.” He also claimed he “wasn’t involved in the settlement agreement.” The findings land as the Trump administration cites Medicaid “fraud” to justify withholding funds from Democratic-led states.
