Pakistan’s “reforms” in a nutshell: Two weeks ago, the PM’s niece flew to London on a newly purchased Gulfstream jet to attend her daughter’s graduation, do some last-minute wedding shopping, and pick up a rare Mouawad diamond set, reportedly without paying the applicable duties or government taxes. Meanwhile, her uncle, the Prime Minister, flew at government expense on an Airbus to New York, via London, on what appears to be a leisurely 10-day trip, ostensibly to deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly, the sort of rhetoric you can hear every hour at Hyde Park Corner. I hope the IMF Managing Director raised these issues as part of the conversation around Pakistan’s reforms and fiscal discipline. I’m not an economist, but I’d wager that between the cost of these two trips, the uncle’s and the niece’s, Pakistan could probably have waived the petroleum levy (which gives tells people is IMF mandated) on fuel for at least a week. 🇵🇰 Pakistan is cracking down hard ahead of Imran Khan's march on Islamabad, and 2 families tied to his party say they were targeted. Punjab PTI leader Raja Shahbaz Bhatti says police broke down his gate and searched his home last night. Separately, KPK Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati says his nephew, Kamal Saleem Swati, survived a deadly attack and an attempted kidnapping, and has released CCTV footage of the incident. The march, which is planned for Sunday, is demanding Khan's release, and the government is pulling out every stop to keep it from happening. Punjab, Pakistan's most populous province, has banned any gathering of 5 or more people in public for the next 13 days, citing intelligence warnings of possible suicide bombings and car bombs at large crowds. Islamabad is already on lockdown, mobile and internet service is set to be cut in neighboring Rawalpindi, and reports say roads into the capital will be blocked with shipping containers and trenches, with bus routes suspended. Pakistan’s Jamaat-e-Islami party has launched a protest march towards Islamabad over soaring fuel prices, demanding that the petroleum levy be scrapped. The gov't has stepped up security as tensions remain high ahead of a separate PTI march demanding Imran Khan’s release.
