I built Whylode for the @IBM Bob 2.0 Hackathon. It’s an IBM Bob mode that asks why before changing legacy code. Thousands of companies still run invoicing, tax, payroll, and other critical systems on IBM i code written in RPG decades ago. The code still works. The problem is that the reasons behind it often live in the heads of people who are retiring. In Fortra’s 2026 IBM i survey, 69% of shops named skills as a top concern, ahead of cybersecurity for the first time in nine years. Nothing breaks until a rule changes. A state raises its sales tax. Someone now has to edit code nobody properly explained. Tools can show you where a value lives. They usually can’t tell you why it’s there, and that context is what determines whether changing it is safe. My sample invoice system has two hardcoded rates. One is the state sales tax rate. The other is a contract rate that must not change until 2029. Nothing in the code tells them apart. A search and replace, or an AI agent guessing from the code alone, can easily change both. Whylode makes Bob ask instead of guess. How it works: → Give Bob the change notice PDF. Bob reads it, breaks it into clauses, and traces the code implementing each one. → When the code can’t explain why a line exists, Bob sends the owner one plain-language question. They answer from their phone through a link. No account required. → That answer is pinned to the exact lines in a memoir. The next time Bob touches those lines, it checks the memoir first, so the same person doesn’t get asked the same question twice. → Bob drafts the diff. Every changed line and every intentionally unchanged line carries its reason. A human approves the final change. In the recorded run, Bob found both rates and asked about the second one. The owner explained that it was a contract rate fixed until 2029. Bob changed only the state tax rate and preserved the contract rate, with the owner’s answer attached as the reason. On the next change, Bob found three relevant lines already explained in the memoir and didn’t ask again. Mike is a plumber. When he's under a sink, he can't pick up, and the caller just rings the next plumber Solo tradespeople lose jobs this way every day. So we built HangON, a voice front desk that answers when you can't we recorded a real call on our live platform. A caller reports a leaking sink, HangON tells her to shut the valve, then asks when she'd like someone out. She says, "Tuesday afternoon? Actually, no. Make it Wednesday at 2." Most bots would cut in at "Actually, no." HangON waits and keeps her final answer Wednesday at 2 is taken on Mike's real calendar, so it offers open slots. She picks Friday at 9:30. It reads the details back, books only after she confirms, and emails her a confirmation from our domain. Mike gets a brief: the problem, the caller's mood, and what to bring @AssemblyAI's Voice Agent API runs the whole call over one connection, interruptions included, with "balanced" turn detection so people can pause mid-thought. Tools handle the calendar, booking and email. The LLM Gateway extracts the job details and writes Mike's brief, leaving blank anything the caller didn't say Our rule: if it doesn't know, it doesn't pretend.
