Across the country, communities, schools, government leaders, organisations and partners came together in a powerful display of collective action to advance the #OneBillionTrees programme. More than 𝟳 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆, giving new meaning to what is possible when a nation plants with one purpose. But the #OneBillionTrees programme is about more than numbers. In the Eastern Cape, MEC for Human Settlements, Public Works & Infrastructure Siphokazi Lusithi conducted a symbolic house handover to destitute families in the Kumkani Mhlontlo area, where 260 households are set to benefit from new homes. But the impact goes beyond the walls of these homes. As part of the #OneBillionTrees programme, each household received two trees — one fruit tree and one indigenous tree — bringing the total to 520 trees planted. From creating dignified spaces for families to growing greener, healthier communities, every tree planted brings South Africa closer to its 10 million trees target.
