Best stages model I have seen for AI adoption. You have to pass through the overly optimistic psychosis phase without trying to cling to or constantly recapture the unsustainable enthusiasm that was mostly motivated by ignorance.
ok but we also have to consider the stages of AI coding adoption because this matters and lots of us have already passed through it and have - oddly - watched higher profile people on here pass through it with an unexpected delay.
yes, you can roughly map the book writers and the youtubers to this path.
Stages of AI Adoption (in reverse order like the quoted image)
- acceptance - realising nothing has really changed but you won't have to spend as much time in deep focus any more.
- professionalism - beginning the hard work to understand how the benefits of your journey can fit into the realities of ongoing professional commercial software development.
- acceptance - understanding that there's no going back but things are really quite challenging still and the smooth world you saw during your psychosis is just not going to happen.
- bargaining - starting to fuse understanding with AI experiences and professional experiences. trying different ways to keep the joy of the psychosis era without the pain and concern.
- focus - cleaning up your messes and figuring out the flaws in your assumptions. learning hard about the constraints and behaviours.
- pain - realisation that the work done during the psychosis period was a really really bad idea and there's a lot of focus work to be done because O M G what a fucking mess...
- psychosis - all-in "the world has changed" mega-coding all the things in all the languages and telling everybody about while simultaneously making wild predictions. coding is obscure languages or recreating something relatively big but only as a demo is mandatory here. as is talking ad nauseum about it.
- realisation - starts to see progress, improves processes. realises that AI can do most of the coding actually.
- denial - accepts that it's actually quite good but denies it's going to replace hand coding in most cases.
- scepticism - sees some light but still confused.
- confusion - can't see how this is so important.

1/ Programmers often use the word “abstraction” without clear sense of its meanings or origins.
It’s important to understand the term and the “pathologies of abstraction” that always accompany it.
IMO, the biggest misconception about coding with AI is that it offers a new level of abstraction.
It absolutely, by any measure, does not. You're still stuck with the exact same code you would have previously written by hand.
So the complete class of problems you had with it is still there. You're just not looking at it directly anymore, but that doesn't change anything.

2/ The most crucial pathology is the inverse relationship between extension and comprehension in abstraction. No abstraction ever completely banishes or obviates the thing it abstracts.
You’re always trading comprehension for extension.

I think the thing with the DHH is just to remember he has a history of rewrites and abrupt breaks with past opinions. He’s on his own journey, you don’t have to take his enthusiastic public proclamations so seriously. He will probably modify them soon.
I have mixed feelings about this talk.
The bits about appreciating both what was and what's to come is great.
The parts where he talks about vibe-coding huge codebases in a language he can't even read are...more worrisome.

Yea but DHH would not have done it otherwise, and importantly, everyone would not have benefitted otherwise.
I cannot stand these useless opinions. Its special because it happened. The original software was shit and got improved with AI.

I could be wrong, but I have never seen someone produce anything of worth. Thinking directly of Steve Yeggie's last 2 years of just utter hot garbage. Factories and Factory Factories appear to be absolutely useless from a real product perspective.
