Unfortunately for Republicans, the situation is very easy to describe: 1. Trump won a cost-of-living election 2. Then he publicly announced a plan to raise the price of imports 3. Then he even-more-publicly started a war that raised the price of gas 4. Meanwhile, he got rich on crypto scams, while engaging in downright Pynchonian misadventures with the reflecting pool and ballroom, which sent the unmistakeable signal that "I care more about random bullshit than America's money problems ... and also I'm not even good at executing on the random bullshit"
For the midterms, I think corruption/self-dealing is issue 1b behind cost of living as 1a. It's not just that people feel things are unaffordable for themselves, they think those in power are helping rich friends get richer. From our latest "America in Focus" focus group...

I'm sure some VPs at Amazon have made a convincing business case that this is the right move but hard to see this as anything but delaying the inevitable, will be seen as quite quaint years from now if they hold out for much longer
The AI assistant has been blocked from shopping on Amazon’s e-commerce platform. theverge.com/tech/998078/ama…

I first watched The Artist on an airplane and it took me 20 minutes to realize I had on the classical channel instead of the movie audio
Does anyone have any more examples

Just to update this chart: 1) AI salience has increased dramatically in the past week - increasing as much in the last week as the previous year combined 2) 80% of voters think it's either very or somewhat likely that AI will cause widespread job loss in the five to ten years 3) 64% of voters think it's either very or somewhat likely that AI could pose a threat to humanity's survival 4) Large bipartisan majorities back immediate government action on AI even when primed about risk from China
Excited to be on Odd Lots to talk about the politics of AI. AI today is less important than it will ever be. Over the past year, AI rose in issue importance faster than any issue we track — it's now more important to voters than climate change, child care, and abortion.

Probably bad that the biggest new technology experienced in the last year by the guy 3rd in line for the presidency was upgrading a 50yo vaccuum (rip beth)
Grassley says he doesn't fully understand AI but has some questions

OpenAI makes a product with a 10% chance of killing humanity and you’re up in arms but Panera made a lemonade that kills you and you cheered, curious

The big overlap is “AI safety skeptics” and “people who thought crypto would be the next big thing in 2021”
stealing this observation from a friend, but it seems to be that people not at the frontier (meta, VCs, etc) who are most skeptical of "AI Safety"

The Senate committee responsible for commerce and technology policy has zero hearings on AI scheduled for the next 4 months. The committee's top priority is, instead, the Protect College Sports Act.
Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.

Rumor is that anthropic is close to finishing the Winds of Winter. They plan to announce it at their IPO. They really hope someone else doesn't try and scoop them and release it first......

I remain extremely struck by this. SV has in many ways justified its actions by hand waving around UBI; so to come out against basic social safety net programs is the communications equivalent of dynamiting your houses foundation. Truly baffling decision from OpenAI
The main thing I have to say to the young generation of Americans is that your grandparents and great-grandparents committed a kind of accounting fraud when they ran our country a century ago with social security, and at the time it was a reasonable affordance to grant our leaders, who were dealing with an economic depression and a world war, but nonetheless they did commit the fraud, and they ended up buying all sorts of extravagant things using the fraudulent gains, including what became the thing we now understand to be the high-modern technocratic nation-state, and that is glorious and also bad and all that, but the thing is there’s still the issue about the accounting fraud, whose debt is coming due and is coming due fast. It is best to consider this with as minimal residue of sentiment as possible, to really sit with it, to stare it coldly in the face. Unwinding the great fraud of the high modernists is your job, whether you wish it to be or not.

A funny thing about all this discourse is that there is a very good bookstore + bar that has been around for years a 10min walk away from this one (although admittedly book club bar has better aesthetics)
