For those watching #Pakistan to see if the regime there will release @ImranKhanPTI to hospital from prison upon the Court's order, it may be useful to consider how we got to the stage where Pakistan's most popular politician ended up in prison rather than leading the country.
Given the concerns about the then upcoming election at the time @MichaelPolakLaw was appointed to chair an independent panel to review the conditions for a free and fair election in Pakistan on 8 February 2024.
The panel members were US Senator @SenPaulStrauss , Romanian MP @catalintenita Australian Senator @DavidShoebridge , and South African MP @brandonpillay1 .
After hearing evidence live from Pakistan, as well as from international experts, we considered the situation based upon the recognised international legal principles for legitimate elections, and found that the conditions for a free and fair election were not in place in Pakistan.
Therefore, the government authorities that have persecuted Imran Khan and his followers, should never have formed a government after a flawed electoral process.
We hope that the government complies with the order of the Court and that this is the beginning of move back towards democracy for Pakistan.
