The bottom line:
KD tells you how competitive a keyword is — not whether you should target it.
Use it as a filter, not a verdict.
Match KD to your site's authority and go after what you can actually win.

🧵 Thread: Keyword difficulty explained
Keyword difficulty (KD) = how hard it is to rank on page 1 for a keyword.
Scored 0–100. Higher = harder.
But it's not a Google metric. It's a tool estimate. Here's how it actually works 👇

But KD alone isn't enough.
Always check:
• Search intent (does it match your content?)
• SERP features (featured snippets steal clicks)
• Content quality of top results (can you beat them?)
Quick reference guide:
• 0–29 = Easy (great for new sites)
• 30–49 = Medium (achievable with effort)
• 50–69 = Hard (need strong authority)
• 70+ = Very hard (established sites only)
KD is relative, not absolute.
A KD 30 keyword is easy for a site with high authority.
The same keyword is brutal for a brand-new blog.
Always compare KD to your own site strength .
How tools calculate it:
Ahrefs: looks at referring domains to top 10 results
SEMrush: domain authority + backlinks + SERP features
Moz: Page Authority + Domain Authority
Each tool has its own formula.
KD measures the competition you're up against.
If page 1 is full of high-authority sites with strong backlinks, KD is high.
If it's forums, weak blogs, and thin content, KD is low.
