Debunking Transphobia youtu.be/JiOc0r31-Os?si=JaPx… it’s a long video based on two years of research and really gets to the heart of the anti-trans moral panic afflicting the English-speaking world. A small number of bigots making a very loud noise and causing us harm.

I've sketched out the topics I'll cover at @golab_conf and it's quite the list. I don't often give workshops so it'll be something special. Stuff on #networking and #crypto that no one else ever covers. Like one of my normal single session talks - only 3 hours of content.
Calling all my lovely #gophers! Will you be in Bologna for @golab_conf next month? Do your tastes stretch to privacy & secure data handling in #golang? Come join Auntie Ellie for a half day of brain bending #crypto #architecture #code golab.io/talks/knowing-much-…

Seeing as I'm technically retired now, I've set aside the whole of October just for writing. Not all the code will be new as there's already a lot of tight stuff in my back catalogue, but some of it has never been seen in #golang before and some will be brand new.

The last time I discussed this topic in depth was my @strangeloop_stl talk in 2018. Well this will be three times the length of that and very much focused on practical advice for secure comms and anonymity. Stuff that can be applied in your own realworld systems.

“It was a lovely way to start.” Miss Helene Lovie Taylor, later Aldwinckle, served in Hut 6, registering encrypted Enigma signals before later running training courses for American personnel. Helene remembered her first day at Bletchley Park, when she was introduced to the team in Hut 6: “One particular memory stands out, seeing rows of girls, all with similar hair styles. Then one of these girls, a Wren, Agnes Smith, recognised me from Aberdeen University, and said she had voted for me for the Student Council there! It was a lovely way to start.” She soon began working with encrypted signals brought in by motorcycle from stations including Beaumanor and Chicksands. “There was so much to learn, as I’d never worked on codes before.” Read Helene’s full interview from the Bletchley Park Oral History Project here: ow.ly/HogN50ZOMbj Interview recorded December 2013.

Oxford researchers argue that LLMs can never invent anything. It is mathematically impossible. They published a paper called “Theory Is All You Need" and it argues against the claim that computational models can generate genuine novelty or new knowledge. They analyzed the limits of generative ai, and the results are a brutal reality check for the idea that ai will replace human decision making under uncertainty. Here is why AI is stuck and human cognition wins: backward-looking vs forward-looking.. llms are probability machines that look backward at existing data. human cognition is forward-looking and capable of generating genuine novelty. human cognition operates theoretically "top-down" rather than "bottom-up" from data. the "data-belief asymmetry".. the researchers use the invention of "heavier-than-air flight" to illustrate this concept. an ai relies on data-based prediction, which is largely imitative. humans, however, use theory-based causal logic that allows them to hold beliefs that go beyond existing data. the intervention gap.. humans don't just process information; we use theory to practically "intervene" in the world. we engage in directed experimentation to generate entirely new data. ai-based models are theory-free and place primacy on existing data and prediction. tldr? AI uses a probability-based approach to knowledge and ia largely imitative. It can process data and make predictions, but human cognition relies on theory-based causal reasoning. The decades-old analogy comparing human minds and computers to mere "input-output" devices is fundamentally flawed.

This statue is over 2300 years old. It's one of the very few ancient sculptures left with its original eyes, and I can’t get over how real they look... The statue is the Antikythera Ephebe, a Greek bronze of a young man made around 340 to 330 BC, and strangely enough, the reason it survived is because it sank. In antiquity, bronze statues were constantly melted down for their metal, turned into weapons and coins, which is why almost none survive. This one went to the bottom of the sea in a shipwreck around 60 BC and lay there for nearly two thousand years, until sponge divers found it in 1900. But let’s go back to my favorite detail: the eyes. When a bronze statue is made, the eyes are often set separately, inlaid with glass, stone, and colored paste to make them lifelike, and over the centuries almost every ancient bronze has lost them, leaving those hollow, blank sockets we think of as classical. The Ephebe still has his original eyes, made of glass paste, one of only a handful of ancient Greek bronzes in the world that do. And it changes everything because he does not gaze blankly into nothing, he seems to be looking, intently, at something that vanished more than two thousand years ago...

My own experiments using AI for JRuby work have been mixed, but I can report a great success: contributions from people that never would have attempted such things before, like Ruby core devs and Rubyists with no JVM experience. So many PRs lately! github.com/jruby/jruby

Four years ago, this photo reached me from inside the hospital in Tehran by someone who worked there and risked everything so the world would see what they did to Mahsa Jina Amini. That person told me plainly: she was killed. Today, on the fourth anniversary of her killing at the hands of the morality police for not wearing proper hijab, her father, a man who has endured threats, surveillance, and a grief no parent should ever carry, has written a letter to his daughter: My dear Jina, Four years have passed, yet your grief has not faded, nor has it rested, even for a moment. To us, you are still that angel whose smile and gentle gaze softened the cruelty of the world around us. In these days we think of you more than ever. In a time that grows darker each day, where hope fades a little more with every sunrise, our hearts still hold fast to the dreams of the young, dreamers like you. If you were here today, what would you be doing? Would we still see that fire for life in your eyes? Would you still speak of tomorrow, still weave your dreams for the days to come? My dearest Jina, before anything else, before the world knew your name, you were simply our daughter. The daughter whose arrival gave our life a new color, and whose loss left a wound in our hearts that no words can reach. But fate wrote your story differently, and your name traveled far beyond our small home. Over these four years, we have asked ourselves again and again: we had one daughter, and they took her from us. And yet the love of the people brought thousands of other children into our family. Amid all this pain, what we will never forget is the compassion and kindness that blossomed among the people of this land. My precious Jina, four years now we have carried your absence with us, every day, every hour. Sometimes a single photograph, a memory, a glance, even the sound of your name is enough to bring everything back as if it happened this morning. For others, four years have passed. But for a father and mother who lost their child, time means something else entirely. Some griefs do not shrink with the passing of days; you simply learn to carry them. And still, through all these years, we have kept one eye fixed on the earth that holds you, and one eye on the day the truth will finally come to light. We believe the secrets you and all your loved ones sleep beneath this soil will not stay buried forever. My Jina, my precious daughter, your name and your memory are with us until our last breath. Woman, Life, Freedom
