The VHS release of Gremlins 2: The New Batch had a brilliant fourth-wall meta gag. In theatres, halfway through, the “film” seems to melt, the screen goes black, and the Gremlins take over the projection booth. Hulk Hogan (in the audience) rips his shirt off, threatens them, and the movie restarts. Joe Dante knew that gag wouldn’t work at home, so for the VHS release he filmed an entirely new version: this time, it looks like the Gremlins have gotten inside your VCR, and Hogan is replaced by John Wayne. Which, with modern eyes, looks like AI. It kinda backfired and caused real confusion (much to Dante's delight). Video rental stores reported some gullible customers returning tapes for refunds, convinced the copy was defective. Later DVD standard editions restored the theatrical Hogan version, but the John Wayne scene became so beloved it often appears on physical releases as a bonus feature.

There is nothing more frustrating when you watch a film and love the animation, the culture, the story, the message, but struggle to connect with the film because you can't stand one of the characters. Sadly my experience with FORGOTTEN ISLAND.
