My JUCO coach used to say: “If you want to play at the next level, you have to become a COMPLETE player.” Hit. Defend. Think. Compete. Don’t just develop the skill everyone notices. Develop the PLAYER. Masterclass from Dave Roberts.

I used to think the same way when I played. HANDS. HANDS. HANDS. I hit .300 for my pro career, so it worked for me. But if I could go back, I’d train the BODY behind the hands. The best hitters don’t just have great hands. They’re great MOVERS. Better Movement = Better Player.
“Hands. Not wrists, not arms, not legs or any of the other things many batting coaches teach, but fast, strong hands are the key to hitting.” Pete Rose on Hitting How to Hit Better Than Anybody

I’m going to nerd out a bit… Cal Ripken Jr. was using movement degeneracy: the ability to accomplish the same task with different movement solutions. Are over-coaching and over-analyzing limiting a player’s ability to explore and find natural solutions?

The best thing you can do this Fall is to improve your athleticism and movement skills.. Comment FLOW and I’ll send you a free Baseball Flows starter kit.
This is not a baseball play. It's an ATHLETICISM play. That slide. That body control. Dodging the tag. Pure MOVEMENT, not baseball skill. Most youth players can't do this. They just never train it. Does your player train movement, or just baseball skills?

I’ve been exploring the concept of “Movement Puzzles” Instead of always telling athletes HOW to move, give them a movement problem and let them explore solutions Make it challenging. Make it fun The puzzle becomes the teacher Coaches/parents: What would you want to learn about this?

I met with an infield coach who talked about 2-hand vs. 1-hand tunneling. I think we’ve overdone the 1-hand approach in training. Volpe has made a lot of errors trying to field everything one-handed. I like this: “Don’th make a routine play harder.”

Ive shown most of my HS infielders this exact clip. I also tell them there’s no reason to make a routine play harder by using 1 hand

Love this!
Junior Caminero said he was being replaced by Caballero late in games because of his defense. So he asked why. When he got the answer, he started showing up early to work with the infield coach. If you’re not playing, don’t blame it on the coach. Ask. Then get to work.

Great debate on this one. Best pushback: “youth players aren’t elite — teach two hands first.” Fair. Two hands is training wheels. Nobody’s saying skip them. But listen to Dansby Swanson — a Gold Glover — on where it’s headed: “Baseball is a one-handed game.” The goal was never to stay on training wheels.
Two things every youth infielder is told: “Get in front of it.” “Use two hands.” Watch elite infielders. They break both rules on many plays. Overrated, or still gospel?

Can two things be true at the same time? Pitchers ARE throwing harder. AND we’re measuring velocity more accurately than we did 20–30 years ago. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. What am I missing?

Every hitting and pitching drill is trying to correct for a global movement impairment. Why not just clean up global movement patterns, then allow the athletes body to organize into its most natural swing and throwing motion?
Are you a parent or coach of a baseball player? Is your son struggling with mechanics? He doesn’t have a mechanics problem, it’s a MOVEMENT problem. 15 minutes, 3x a week, no equipment. That’s all it takes to start building it Comment FLOW for starter Kit!
