measurement at the limits of quantum mechanics and gravity (and sometimes both).

How about finding the first UV divergence in N=8 SUGRA? Is that out of reach? Would be a very cool result and probably more of a milestone in amplitudes

Given the power of AI I have been studying increasingly complex physics systems, since I am less limited by my personal computational ability. Unfortunately, this appears to mean I am now a condensed matter physicist.

I think breaking down mathematicians' motivations into like 'wanting to understand math' and 'ego' misses a lot. Ppl value participating in a process where the growth of their individual understanding has a rich two-way relationship to the growth of collective understanding

Pretty close.
Prediction: the quantum info theory singularity will occur on Sept 8. Monday Sept 7 is a US holiday, therefore the monday listing will merge with tuesday. There will be 200 papers on quant-ph, and I will finally give up trying to read the whole thing

Welcome to the era of zero-trust math research. You can't even send a preprint of your work to colleagues privately now without having to worry about somebody trying to scoop you with 10k agents on an internal model. Sad times.

We built this @BerkeleyLab. It detects electrons from nuclear decays. Could not be more proud of this little machine or the people who made it. Three years of hard work, one paper: arxiv.org/abs/2608.06661

Truly deep problems will remain open for a long time in all fields. Current AI enables quick solutions to sub-problems which until recently would have been sufficient to publish when solved. Everyone needs to move their goalposts about what constitutes publishable progress
Frontier LLMs can now solve many quantum computing and theoretical computer science problems that I've personally spent weeks or months working on. How is everyone else dealing with the existential crisis that accompanies this reality?

Did you know that Volta invented electricity without using AI? Truly GOAT stuff

Very inspiring. The universe remains full of mystery
Mysterious little red dots. Impossibly large black holes. Galaxies that shouldn’t exist. Since coming online in 2022, the James Webb Space Telescope has revealed a series of cosmic enigmas that challenge our very understanding of astrophysics. quantamagazine.org/astrophys…

Can you "test the quantization of gravity" with gravitational wave experiments? Last week I was asked for an overview on this question. This was a nice chance to spell out some details I usually have to trim, so I'm sharing the slides: drive.google.com/file/d/12kU…

Cute observation, which can be summarized in two lines: 1. Nonlinear QM models can solve NP problems in polynomial time (Abrams & Lloyd, 1998) 2. Taking G_mn = <T_mn> at face value, the result is a nonlinear QM model. However, modern "classical" gravity models do not obey 2.

So... yet another reason to not use G_mn = <T_mn> as a defining equation of matter coupled to gravity. But there are plenty of other "semiclassical" gravity models that, presumably, do not give polynomial time solutions of NP problems. Still have to kill those with experiment :)
