my past startup experience has taught me there are very few common things between successful startups:
1. hard work. forget the concept of “hours” and just get it done
2. endurance. you will fail several times and have to keep trying
3. clear evolving strategy. so you don’t repeat mistakes.
everything else is just survivor bias.
We've reached a point where people who've never built a company have absolute certainty about how companies should be built. Meanwhile, founders who've spent years building one will openly admit how much they still don't know. The internet has created a strange world where those with the least experience often have the strongest opinions, while those with the most experience are expected to defend every word they say. It's remarkable how much easier entrepreneurship looks when the only thing you've ever built is an opinion about it.
i keep seeing this argument again and again when it comes to cost of flights. and yet every other business doesn’t work like this. you start low enough, make early losses or very thin margins, then the numbers add up and you break even then profits start to grow.
i need someone to please tell me why this has to be different for airlines.

harry kane just proved that it’s geography limiting you. stop trying so hard to make sense of where you were born and go where you have the best opportunity to do what you are gifted in. for example if you hate capitalism go to russia or north korea 😂
this is one case where i am certain it’s malice not incompetence. most african governments have some level of authoritarianism and hence the need to control the population. wealthy citizens are very hard to control. poor citizens need to be incentivized to live another day. enter the foreign investor: they provide the jobs to keep the poor occupied and fed while the government can keep a tight lid on which locals are given the chance to wealth.
In many African countries, a foreign multinational gets the red carpet while a local entrepreneur gets sent from office to office.
Officials help the big investor get approvals. The person trying to build a business with their own savings is left to fight through the usual regulatory burden.
Of course people resent that. They can see that the rules are easier for someone else.
But the answer is not to make life harder for foreign companies. Welcome their investment (provided they follow the country’s laws and create real value for people) AND give local entrepreneurs the same freedom to build.
That is what I am fighting for: a tiny African entrepreneur should have just as much freedom to succeed in their own country as a big multinational or investor flying in.
last week a hacker broke into the websites of more than 100 companies and left almost all the work to AI. the researcher who watched it put the cost at about $50 a break-in, roughly a platter of nyama choma and a bottle of waragi.
small institutions were always safe because nobody could be bothered. that arithmetic has changed. meanwhile m-pesa alone handles more than 136 million transactions a day, and kenya's immigration PS admitted his ministry had yet to cost the huduma namba project. uganda's regulator thinks switching off bitchat is "very easy".
fixing this is changing our thinking of software as sexy additions to infrastructure and start thinking of them as critical infrastructure themselves for which we must recruit well, regulate well and pay well.

if utd had stood by amorim, brought in some wingbacks and midfielders in the summer, they would be much more improved by now. but no, they want immediate results.
Sylvester Stallone says casting his daughter Scarlet in ‘Tulsa King’ is nepotism.
“Of course it’s nepotism, you idiot. That’s why we’re parents. We want the best for our children. So obviously, we let them have every advantage.”

i have found that kenyans have very strongly held but mostly wrong opinions of other great lakes countries, often formed from surface level information and assumptions.
it can be frustrating to explain it out of them but it comes from a good place. they see the opportunity of a better off region if we can all move towards their direction (democratically and economically) asap.
some are also worried of bad governance from the neighborhood emboldening would be authoritarians who would take them backward.
I think one of the worst things about Rwanda going mainstream is how every outsider thinks they know all about the country and its history even, bro the amount of bullshit i read from Kenyans gets my head turned.
