I'm flying 675 km from Vancouver to Calgary for Stampede week. I run @frontrowvc ROC scout team nationally. I see the deal flow coming out of every major campus ecosystem in Canada. Alberta's startup and tech scene has been thriving. It's growing in a way that's honestly hard to keep up with from a distance. The early-stage companies coming out of there this year have been genuinely cool to watch, and I wanted to see it firsthand instead of from behind a screen. I've been at conferences where the programming looks incredible on paper and the best conversation happens at dinner after. The room matters more than the agenda. July 8th, Lindsay Park. 25 people showed up to our pitch night last week. The youngest was 15. The oldest was 50. Most had never pitched to anyone before. @SanketM321 and I set it up as a deck feedback session. By the second presentation, the room had taken over. People in the audience started questioning founders, pushing on their assumptions, offering to be beta users. We stopped running it and let it happen. The startups ranged wide: → A dementia care tool → An energy harvesting company → A cloud agnostic AI DevOps platform → A dating app rethinking how people meet in real life → A 15-year-old building a pocket-sized AI hardware device that runs agentic tasks off conversations Slide decks went out the window fast. Founders demoed live, talked through raw ideas, and got real feedback from people who could actually use what they were building. Some walked out with their first testers. Most of these people had never pitched to a room before. They needed somewhere low-stakes enough to show unfinished work, and a crowd willing to take it seriously.
