At the worst of the decline, America was losing six neighborhood bars a day. And every single closure is permanent. You can't build a dive bar. You can only inherit one.

This is what's left, what advocates call "the last frontier." Cut down, it's not coming back in our lifetime, or our children's, or theirs. That matters more than most people realize. This single forest stores roughly 20% of all the carbon held in the entire U.S. national forest system, more per acre than any forest on Earth. Left standing, it's doing the work of holding back roughly a year and a half of the country's entire greenhouse gas emissions. This is the Tongass, Alaska's 17-million-acre rainforest, the largest national forest in America and one of the largest intact temperate rainforests left on Earth. The Roadless Rule currently protects 9 million acres of it from new logging roads. It's named for the Tlingit Tongass people, whose homeland this has been for thousands of years, and the forest still supports Indigenous communities who rely on it today. Its streams produce 25% of the entire West Coast's commercial salmon harvest, and its old growth is critical habitat for wolves, bears, deer, and 350 species of birds. The Trump administration wants to repeal the Roadless Rule entirely, opening 44.7 million acres of national forest nationwide, including this ground, to road building and logging for the first time in 25 years. Their stated reason is wildfire prevention. New research says otherwise: wildfires are actually 4 times more likely to start in areas that already have roads. That leaves a real window to push back.
